GO HABS GO

At GymDepot.ca, we dream of seeing the Canadiens beat the Hurricanes in 7 now ! 😀

Because in Quebec, when the Canadiens start winning, the energy changes everywhere. Conversations change. Evenings change. The atmosphere changes. And suddenly, everyone starts believing a little more.

Discover Hockey’s Explosive Energy

Why Do Hockey Players Have So Much Explosive Energy?

Modern hockey is a sport of repeated explosions. A player doesn’t simply “do cardio.” They accelerate, stop, change direction, absorb contact, explode again, recover quickly… and repeat the process moments later.

That combination is what stands out: speed, power, endurance, recovery and the ability to stay sharp even when the body is already tired.

Explosive Power

Quick starts, hits, directional changes and shots require strong legs, powerful hips and a solid core.

Intense Cardio

Shifts on the ice resemble intervals: very intense effort, short recovery, back into action. Completely different from slow steady cardio.

Fast Recovery

The real difference is not just being explosive once. It’s being able to become explosive again and again throughout the game.

How Do They Train to Develop That Energy?

Serious hockey players develop multiple qualities at the same time: strength, speed, power, cardio, mobility, balance and recovery. The goal isn’t simply to “be in shape.” The goal is to be ready to perform intensely at the right moment.

Strength

Squats, lunges, deadlifts, pushes, pulls and unilateral exercises to build a strong foundation.

Intervals

Sprints, cycling, rowing, incline treadmill work or short circuits to repeat intense efforts with controlled recovery.

Mobility & Recovery

Hips, ankles, back, shoulders, breathing, sleep and active recovery. Performance also depends on what happens between efforts.

Example of a Modern Hockey-Inspired Training Week

This is not the official training program of a professional team. It’s an educational example inspired by the principles used to build strength, explosiveness, cardio and recovery.

5-Day Sample Program

Day Objective Example Training
Monday Leg Strength Squats or leg press, walking lunges, hip thrusts, calves, core work. Finish with 10 minutes of light cycling.
Tuesday Explosive Cardio 8 to 12 intervals of 30 seconds at high intensity on a bike, rower or treadmill, with 60 to 90 seconds recovery.
Wednesday Upper Body & Core Pulls, presses, shoulder exercises, trunk rotations, planks, anti-rotation and mobility work.
Thursday Active Recovery 25 to 40 minutes of moderate cardio, hip mobility, dynamic stretching, breathing and cooldown.
Friday Power + Intervals Controlled jumps, sled pushes if available, explosive movements, then 6 to 8 short intense intervals.

Important: this type of training should be adapted to age, fitness level, injuries, recovery and personal goals.

Modern hockey demands incredible conditioning.

Explosive cardio, fast recovery, leg power, mental endurance, VO2 max, intervals… today’s hockey requires far more than talent.

We created a dedicated page to explore the connection between hockey, energy, training and modern cardio.

Your Cardio: The Starting Point

You don’t need to train like a professional athlete to feel more energy. But the principle remains the same: when your cardio improves, your body recovers better, your breathing returns faster and repeated efforts become easier.

For many people, cardio is the simplest place to start: walking faster, running progressively, cycling, rowing, climbing an incline, following guided workouts and starting again tomorrow.

Treadmill

Ideal for walking, running, incline training and progressing at your own pace.

Bike

Excellent for intervals, intense cardio and low-impact training.

Rower

A complete movement combining cardio, legs, back, arms and endurance.

Immersive Cardio: When Training Becomes More Motivating

The hardest part is not always starting. It’s starting again. That’s where immersive cardio becomes interesting.

With equipment like NordicTrack and a platform like iFIT, you can run, walk, cycle or row through inspiring environments, follow coaches, discover destinations and turn an ordinary workout into an experience.

The right equipment won’t do the work for you. But it can make the effort clearer, more motivating and much easier to repeat consistently.
